YouTube, the video sharing website owned by Google is to become an unlikely battlefield for the battle of the next US President.

Although there is still 18 months to go before a victor is announced, President hopefuls including Democrats Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Bill Richardson and Republicans John McCain, Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani have signed up to have their own channels.

Best know for its short amusing videos, the site has set up "You Choose '08" that will allow candidates to control how they exchange views with voters rather than watch them act out silly videos.

The runners will be able to post a video in which they speak on a given issue while members of the public will be able post a video response or questions for the candidate.

Politicians will however, have the final say about what appears on their channels.
