Virgin Media has announced that it's going to be launching a set-top box that's capable of accessing the six new HD channels that the broadcaster has announced this year. The V HD Box will be available without extra subscription fees.

Instead, you'll just pay £49 for the box, plus installation costs of about £15 if you do it yourself, or £35 for an engineer. There's a few other misc costs too, depending on whether you've got an existing box, or want more than one box in your house. To be eligible, you'll need to upgrade to the M+ TV tier or above too.

But once you've done all that, you'll be able to watch  ITV, Eurosport, Discovery, Sci Fi, E4 and Film4 in high definition when they're launched later in the year, as well as the BBC and Channel 4 HD channels that are currently available. There's also a pile of on-demand content that's available in HD, too.

The box is 3D-ready, and comes with HDMI, SCART, USB and ethernet ports. It offers PVR functionality, but just has a single tuner - so you'll need to upgrade to the V+HD box if you want to watch one thing while you're recording another. If Virgin's offering floats your boat, then you can pre-register for the box at
