Following the now official news that Toshiba is to discontinue HD DVD, bowing to rival disc format Blu-ray, Pocket-lint got in touch with the European arm of the Blu-ray Disc Association for a response to the news.

"We in the Blu-ray Disc Association are very happy that this long format war is officially over", says Frank Simonis, of Philips and the European chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association.

"Now the task ahead for our member companies is to
promote the Blu-ray Disc format as the best way to bring premier quality high definition content into consumers' lives."

Toshiba will stop producing HD DVD players immediately but have insisted warranties will be honoured and updates still issued as and when necessary for existing products.
