Reuters is reporting that Sony has "pulled the plug" on production of OLED televisions in its home market of Japan, with "sluggish demand" said to be the reason.

Just 2 years after Sony announced the launch of the XEL-1, the 11-inch OLED television available to consumers with cash, it's to stop sales of the model in Japan when inventory runs out.

The television - which launched with a £3500 price tag in the UK in January 2009 - will still be available in America, Europe and other markets where investment in OLED R&D will continue.

"We will continue to consider new products and applications including OLED TVs", Sony spokesperson Shigenori Yoshida told Reuters.
