Samsung has announced that it will be following on the heals of LG and be releasing a Duo HD player capable of Blu-ray disk and HD DVD playback this summer.

As promised nearly two years ago, the Samsung BD-UP5000 will enable consumers to watch high definition movies regardless of the disk type they are released on.

Samsung will be taking on the might LG product that lacks the ability to fully support both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats and their interactive technologies, HDi and BD-Java. The split in the DVD market has caused massive strife for DVD manufacturers to design integrated units.

“We are very pleased to announce the upcoming release of our Duo HD player. Consumers are hungry for more HD content but are currently confused about competing formats. Samsung’s Duo HD player will allow consumers access to every HD movie title available regardless of the authoring format”, said Dongsoo Jun, executive vice president of the digital AV division at Samsung Electronics.

We will keep you updated on the offical release date and UK prices however judging that its standalone Blu-ray player costs £800 expect it to be expensive.
