Philips has launched its latest home theatre system, the Philips HTS8000S, that promises true multi-channel 5.1 performance from a 2.1 system all for £499.

The system includes an integrated slot DVD/SACD player and digital amplifier, which drives two speakers and a subwoofer. The amplifier delivers 550 watts Total RMS output and is equipped with Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic II decoders, along with an FM RDS tuner with 20 station presets.

Philips are putting down the sound claim by using its SonoWave Speaker System that reproduces multi-channel audio from just two stereo speakers and a subwoofer. The SonoWave technology achieves this by positioning independent drivers within the stereo speakers at precise angles to project sound and generate a dynamic and impressive 5.1 soundstage.

The DVD player is compatible with a wide range of video and audio disc formats including stereo and multi-channel SACD, DiVX, MP3 CD and Picture CD.

The system offers video and audio connections in the form of Scart, S-video output, and coaxial digital.
