Both Panasonic and Virgin have announced independently the launch of download music services today.

Panasonic's plans to succeed by undercutting the established powerhouses of the download empire like Napster and iTMS by up to 30p a tune.

Panasonic's downloads will be available for just 49p in a special offer running until August 7, and music lovers who spend £50 or more can get each track for just 39p compared to most download stores 79p per track.

It means a whole album full of songs can be downloaded from the Panasonic site for a fiver. Panasonic's site currently has more than 750,000 tunes to choose from.

Virgin's service will launch in September and feature 1,000,000 tracks to chose from as well as the ability to sign up to a subscription service similar to Napster to Go.
