The Logitech Ultimate Hub is a new "appcessory", yes we hate that word too, that will allow iPhone and Android users to ditch the bundles of remote controls for their home entertainment system and use their phone instead.

The device, available later this year, will let you replace up to eight remote controls from anywhere in the house, using the smartphone you already own.

Previously offered as part of the Logitech Harmony Ultimate and Logitech Harmony Smart Control products, Logitech has now decided to create a standalone product for customers who want to control their digital experience with just a smartphone.

This time around however, all you'll need to do is install a small box and download the Harmony Smartphone App to your phone. Yep, no more fighting over the remote, just which channel to watch - installing it on multiple phones means you all have control.

Like all Harmony remote controls on the market, you'll also be able to customise activities (Play DVD) and choose your own set of favourite channels icons if that floats your boat.

In app users will be able to thumb across the apps screen to adjust the volume, change the channel, fast-forward or rewind, pause, play, and skip forward or back just like they can with a number of dedicated TV remote apps from manufacturers like Samsung and LG, but with the benefit here being that you can control more than just your TV.

Logitech has said the "appcessory" also works with services like Netflix on game consoles, including the Nintendo Wii, the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

The Logitech Harmony Ultimate Hub is expected to be available in the US and Europe in August. In the US it will cost $99.99 (£65). No word on UK pricing yet.
