The BBC has released a version of the iPlayer that works fully with Mac and Linux computers - although only in beta at this stage.

Mac and Linux users have been able to stream iPlayer programming, but have not yet enjoyed the full service from the Beeb including the ability to download.

Previously, the ability to download programmes was only available for Windows users. Now, the new download manager allows users to view their favourite BBC shows, online or offline.

Created with Adobe's AIR technology, the new version, known as BBC iPlayer Desktop, is available as a trial version for those who sign up to be an iPlayer Labs tester via the iPlayer site.

A finished version is not likely to be released until February 2009.
