The BBC has been given permission to extend its HD channel's hours for the Christmas period, so from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day it will be on air from noon, until the early hours of the morning.

The programmes shown in high definition will be many of the BBC's Christmas films, while there will also be a number of the comedy Christmas specials appearing in HD - including Gavin and Stacey and The Royle Family.

The Beeb will also show dramas like The 39 Steps, and There Was a Crooked House, described as a late night horror story in three parts in HD.

In addition, the broadcaster is to show some of what they say are the best programmes that have been put out on BBC HD over the last year - including the Lost Land of the Jaguar, Michael Palin's New Europe, and the Wimbledon's Men's Singles' Final.
