A survey commissioned by NDS has revealed that over 70% of Brits who own a personal (or digital) video recorder, or PVR (or DVR), say that they can't live without it.

According to the poll, only the washing machine or microwave are other household gadgets prized over the home cinema kit.

NDS reports that he vast majority of respondents would rather give up their landline phone, dishwasher, radio, hairdryer and MP3 player than their DVR.

64% of respondents with families believe that having a DVR has "improved family life" and respondents who have partners say that using a DVR has improved their relationship (62%).
