TalkTalk has announced a new services package that offers a YouView set-top-box, unlimited broadband and landline evening and weekend calls for £7.50 a month. You will also need to pay for line rental at £15.40 a month, but TalkTalk is offering the reduced fee permanently, not just as a promotion. So new and existing customers can take up the offer that will cost them the equivalent of £22.90 a month.
Direct rival BT offers a package for new customers that will cost them £20.45 a month (plus a £35 activation fee) for the first six months, but this rises to £36.45 a month thereafter. Existing customers cannot take advantage of BT's offer.
The TalkTalk deal includes a lower cost, smaller YouView box worth £149, which still offers the ability to pause and rewind live TV, has seven-day catch-up and on demand viewing with services such as BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5, and all Freeview channels for live viewing. It doesn't however have the ability to record TV shows. You will have to upgrade to the provider's Plus TV package at £15.50 a month plus line rental for that.
While the broadband as part of the offer is unlimited and not capped, TalkTalk does not quote data speeds for its basic package as they depend on "the quality of your phone line and where you live". It does offer an upgrade to fibre optic cable broadband for an extra £10 a month.
