A benchmark test result has appeared online that many believe is from a Samsung Galaxy Note 7.7 - a new tablet that will take the S Pen concept from the Note, Note 2 and Note 10.1 and attach it to a 7.7-inch Android device.

While the test itself - discovered on benchmark site NenaMark - features absolutely no mention of the name or screen size. The closest it gets is with the native screen resolution of 1280 x 720, but it does carry the model number GT-N5100. This has previously been attached to former rumours about the existence of a 7-inch version of the Note, but is completely uncorroborated at present.

Certainly, the model numbers of the Galaxy Note family are preceded by GT-N, with the Note 2 being the GT-N7100 and the Note 10.1 being the GT-N8000 or GT-N8010, so GT-N5100 would definitely fit in with the convention as a Galaxy Note device. But why would a new 7.7-inch version have a lower number (the original Note was GT-N7000)?

We do know that a similarly tagged device was recently given Wi-Fi and DLNA certification by the respective groups, so it definitely exists.

Perhaps we'll find out more about the mysterious device at CES in Las Vegas at the beginning of January. If not, you can bet that all will be revealed at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February instead.

Pocket-lint will be at both trade shows to bring you more.
