The TouchPad story bonanza continues, this time with the news that the tablet will benefit from an over the air update that brings with it new functionality.

Following the recent £89 TouchPad fire sale, HP is reporting huge activation spikes and up to five times increase in application downloads. It looks like the company plans on sticking to its decision to continue to support webOS despite dumping the TouchPad, Veer and Pre 3 devices

Unfortunately there are no release date or details as to what the actual update will include. A HP spokesperson, however, has confirmed to CNET that it's coming:

"We expect that HP TouchPad owners can look forward to an over-the-air update that will enhance the platform and add functionality and a growing applications catalog."

On top of all that excitement there is also another set of six free apps for current TouchPad owners to enjoy, including major titles like Angry Birds HD.

Shame, really, that HP made the decision to dump the tablet, especially given the support they are showing for webOS after the announcement. The move to bolster the applications catalogue could greatly improve some of the operating system's shortcomings and who knows, maybe even lead to better devices in future.
