An Asus exec has confirmed that the company is to launch a tablet with Google to rival the Amazon Kindle Fire at Google I/O in San Francisco on Wednesday.

"Google Inc will soon unveil a tablet co-branded with Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc and priced to compete with Amazon's Kindle Fire device, an Asustek executive said on Wednesday," Reuters is reporting.

"It's targeting Amazon. The Kindle is based on Google's platform but with its own service, so Google has to launch its own service, too," said the executive of the device to the new agency.

Rumours have been circling for some time that Google was looking to reinvigorate the Android tablet market with a new, cheaper device to capture some of the initial success enjoyed by Amazon so far with the 7-inch tablet.

Reuters has said that the Asustek executive - who did not want to be named because the planned device has not yet been made public - declined to give details on its price, specifications or launch timetable, however Pocket-lint sources have independently confirmed to us that the company will launch the new tablet at the developer conference.

The new tablet is expected to run the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean.

Pocket-lint will be covering the event live, bringing you all the latest news and first impressions of the device from the event.
