(Pocket-lint) - There are a couple of names being bandied around for Apple's next tablet, due to be unveiled on 7 March. The most popular is iPad 3, but a few believe that if the device is not a massive technological leap over the current model, it could adopt the same suffix as the iPhone range and be called the iPad 2S.

However, a new name has been added to the mix, one that would match rumours that the next slate will sport a 2048 x 1536 resolution Retina display; iPad HD. And it's not just idol gossip that hints at that particular branding either.

Belkin and Griffin, accessory and case makers for Apple devices (among others), have listed the name in official part listings. Griffin, in fact, goes as far to call it iPad HD with a (3) in brackets, and it's not beyond the pale, considering the launch is just days away, that Apple's partners are now privy to this information.

In addition, Gizmodo reports that one of its readers has spotted the name iPad HD cropping up in usage data from an application called Tapatalk. Like Google Analytics, Tapatalk shows statistics for websites on such things as how many visits the site is getting, and via what devices.

Some of these stats are showing that a small amount of visits have been through a device listed as an iPad HD, and that some are coming from a piece of kit with a 2048 x 1536 resolution.

The latter, of course, could be coincidence. And we wonder, if there's an iPad and an iPad HD listed on the Tapatalk graph, why no iPad 2? Hmmm... We remain sceptical.

At least, though, there's not long to wait to find out for sure.

What do you think? Would iPad HD be a good name? Let us know in the comments below...
