Sometimes the most exciting rumours can come in the most boring boxes. In Apple's case, even the most obscure titbits are worth a search, as sometimes juicy nuggets of rumourdom can emerge from the ether at random.

This time round it is the turn of the iPad 3 to get the rumour treatment, with a piece of code found in iOS 5 not only pointing to its existence, but of a possible retina display. According to Digitimes, the iPad 3 prototypes currently being tested are known as J1 and J2. One perhaps being 3G, the other a Wi-Fi only version.

The J2 name exists in dev code strings for iOS 5. This means in all likely hood that first off, the device exists and is being tested right now, although we would have expected that. Second that, as Digitimes says, it will be packing a high resolution 2048 x 1536 display. The jump in res means two LED light bars are necessary on either side of the screen in order to keep things looking fresh.

Exciting stuff from the big A. We cant really imagine what an iPad-sized Retina Display will look like, we do however imagine it will trump just about every other tablet out there by quite a long way. The fact that Apple is clearly testing the tablets on iOS 5 builds also means launch might not be that far off. Then again with Apple rumours it is just impossible to know.
