Amazon has announced an extensive refresh of its family of Fire tablets, sweeping in a new user interface in Fire OS 5 "Bellini", impressive specs and aggressive prices.

There are two new Amazon Fire HD tablets in 8 and 10 inch sizes, the hero devices of the new family. These new devices are the thinnest Fire tablets yet at just 7.7mm thick. The 10-inch Fire tablet weighs 432g, about the same weight as the iPad Air 2.

There's an HD IPS display on the front of these new devices and they offer a 16:10 aspect, sticking to widescreen rather than following the trend towards 4:3. That's going to be great for watching movies through Amazon Instant Video. The display is topped with Gorilla Glass 4 for durability.

We've always been impressed by the quality of audio from Fire tablets and once again they come with Dolby Audio-tuned stereo speakers offering virtual 5.1 surround sound.

Both are powered by a quad-core 1.5GHz MediaTek chipset. The HD 8 comes with either 8 or 16GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD up to 128GB, while the HD 10 offers 16 or 32GB, again with microSD. There are front and rear cameras and the battery is said to last for up to 8 hours on these tablets.

The Fire HD 8 will cost from £129.99 and comes in black, magenta, blue and tangerine. The Fire HD 10 will cost from £169.99 in black or white. The black versions will arrive on 30 September, with other colours appearing later in October.

Aside from these flagship launches, there's a new Fire tablet, which is incredibly good value for money. At only £49.99, the new 7-inch device aims to make Amazon's tablets even more accessible.

There's a 7-inch IPS display on the front and a quad-core 1.3GHz processor, as well as support for microSD cards for storage expansion. Battery life is said to last for 7 hours and there are front and rear cameras.

The new Fire tablet will cost £49.99 and come in black, blue, orange, green and purple, making it fun for all the family. You can even buy them in a family pack: for £249.95 you can buy five and get a sixth free.

Finally there's a new Kids Edition tablet. This is the Fire tablet in a protective cover in blue or pink to keep it safe from playroom drops and knocks. It comes with a 1-year subscription to Kindle for Kids Unlimited and a 2-year guarantee.

It will be available for £99.99, sold alongside the current £199.99 Fire HD Kids Edition. There will also be a child-friendly web browser coming in the future, so you can let your kids browse websites carefully curated by Amazon.

All the new devices come with a new version of Fire OS 5 "Bellini". This new version of Amazon's OS introduces a number of new features, integrating Amazon's services so it's easy to get to all your content.

Based on Android Lollipop, Fire OS 5 is a slightly lighter take on Android, but brings you some great new features. The new features integrate Amazon Underground, but also offers On Deck, a feature that ensures you have something to watch when offline, by downloading content in the background.

The new Amazon Fire tablets are available to pre-order from today.
