The race to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and, therefore, the UK's Prime Minister is coming to a head - a head-to-head, in fact.

With all but two candidates eliminated in the last couple of weeks, the process to replace Boris Johnson will finally finish on 5 September 2022 - the date when we will find out the next PM.

There's one remaining debate before the UK's Tory membership votes on their favourite candidate between Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, so here's how to watch it and catch up on the previous debates broadcast so far.

When is the next Tory Party leadership debate on TV?

The final live TV debate will be broadcast tonight, Monday 25 July 2022. It'll start at 9pm BST.

Previous debates were held on 15 and 17 July 2022. A third was planned for 19 July, but was cancelled after two of the candidates at the time pulled out. Ironically, they were the two that ended up reaching the final round of voting.

How to watch the next debate to become the next PM

The BBC will host the final live TV debate between the two remaining candidates in the race to become Conservative Party leader and, therefore, the UK's next Prime Minister.

It will be available to watch live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. You will also be able to stream it online in its entirety via iPlayer after it finishes.

How to watch the previous debates

The first Tory Party leadership debate was hosted by Channel 4 and you can re-watch it via the broadcaster's catch-up service, All 4. It is available across many devices, including mobile and online at the channel's website here.

ITV followed up with its own debate on Sunday. It was shown on the main ITV channel and the ITV Hub, but you can re-watch it in full below or on the ITV Hub. You can also watch the re-run online via the broadcaster's website here.

Sky News' planned debate was cancelled after Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss pulled out shortly beforehand.

Who are the candidates in the Conservative Party leadership race to be next UK Prime Minister?

Here are the final two candidates left in the race to become the next Tory Party leader and UK Prime Minister.

  • Rishi Sunak - Former Chancellor of the Exchequer - MP for Richmond (Yorks)
  • Liz Truss - Foreign Secretary - MP for South West Norfolk

These are the originally declared candidates eliminated so far.

  • Suella Braverman - Attorney General - MP for Fareham
  • Kemi Badenoch - Former Minister of State for Local Government, Faith and Communities - MP for Saffron Walden
  • Jeremy Hunt - MP for South West Surrey
  • Penny Mordaunt - Minister of State - MP for Portsmouth North
  • Tom Tugendhat - MP for Tonbridge and Malling
  • Nadhim Zahawi - Chancellor of the Exchequer - MP for Stratford-on-Avon

How will the next PM be chosen?

To be eligible to be the next Party leader and, therefore, Prime Minister, each candiate was required to have the official support of at least 20 sitting MPs (up from the usual eight).

The contest then asked all Party MPs to vote on their favourite candidate by ballot and anyone receiving fewer than 30 votes was eliminated.

A second round ballot subsequently eliminated the candidate with the fewest votes. This continued until only two candidates were left.

Now that there are only two remaining candidates, the vote widens to all Conservative Party members up and down the UK. Each submits their preference via a postal vote, with a winner announced on 5 September 2022.
