Netflix is days away from releasing the second season of The Witcher. The first season was a huge hit for the streaming service, filling a gap in the market left vacant by Game of Thrones.

Its adult storylines and whirling action have attracted plenty of new fans, alongside the legions already well on board thanks to the successful CD Projekt Red games. Those fans have plenty to be excited about, as positive early reviews for the second season have begun to trickle out.

Now that the second season's release is right around the corner, we've rounded up everything you need to know.

The Witcher season 2: Release date

The Witcher's second season will debut on Netflix on 17 December 2021 at 12am PT.  Netflix announced the date during the inaugural WitcherCon.

The Witcher season 2: Plot rumours

From what we can tell, the second season picks up where the first season ended, with Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) meeting up with exiled Princess Cirilla. The duo goes to Kaer Morhen - the mountain fortress where Geralt trained - so that Ciri can become a witcher, too. But it doesn't look easy.

For those who've read the books or played the games, the story is a known quantity, but we don't know how closely Netflix is going to stick to the established canon. Still, it looks like this season will offer more of the same, as the empire in Nilfgaard seeks to get Ciri back at any cost. Of course, there's also the looming big bad of the Witcher story, The Wild Hunt, a group of spectral wraiths whose appearance foreshadows doom.

In the books and video games, the Wild Hunt set their sights on Ciri, but they'll have to go through Geralt to get her.

The Witcher season 2: The last season?

Netflix is continuing to bank on The Witcher's success. It's already greenlit a third season of the show. This means we don't have to worry (yet) about the risk of cancellation ending any storylines prematurely. There's also a live-action prequel series coming, called The Witcher: Blood Origin.

Netflix also made the surprise announcement that it's working on an animated show in the Witcher universe for kids. If that sounds a little bit of an odd fit, it could come as a relief to any parents getting tired of telling their kids they can't watch the show itself.
