Amazon Prime Video's epic fantasy adventure has proven to be a hit with critics and viewers alike. The show is based on a bestselling series of novels, there are 14 books in total and they're pretty hefty, so there is a lot of material to draw from. With season one complete, we're still only at the beginning, we know there's a lot more to come. Here's everything you need to know about The Wheel of Time's upcoming seasons and how to watch them.

When is The Wheel of Time season 2 out?

While no release date has been announced, we know that The Wheel of Time's second season began filming prior to the show's launch in July 2021, filming concluded in May 2022 and we were treated to a behind-the-scenes teaser to celebrate.

Despite releasing a recap and teaser trailer, there has still been no official release date announced for season 2. From the information we can glean, we think an early 2023 release is most likely, or late December at the earliest.

How many episodes are in The Wheel of Time season 2

Not much has been revealed regarding season 2, but we know that it will consist of eight episodes, just like the first season.

The first episode of the second season is titled 'A Taste of Solitude'. This was revealed via a tweet from the official The Wheel of Time account back in May 2021.

Who is cast in The Wheel of Time season 2?

Undoubtedly, Rosamund Pike will be returning as Moiraine along with her bodyguard and ward Lan Mandragoran, played by Daniel Henney.

Our young heroes from the Two Rivers will be returning as well.

Josha Stradowski as Rand al’Thor, Madeleine Madden as Egwene al’Vere, Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara and Zoe Robins returning as Nynaeve al’Meara.

The notable exception is that Barney Harris will not return to the show as Mat Cauthon. This character has been recast, with Irish actor Dónal Finn taking up the role.

No official reason has been given for Barney's departure, and with the actor having deleted his social media accounts, it may remain something of a mystery.

Ceara Coveney, Meera Syal and Natasha O'Keeffe have been cast as upcoming characters in the second season. O'Keeffe and Syal's characters are undisclosed at the moment but we know that Coveney will be taking the role of Elayne Trakand.

Elayne Trakand is a massively significant character in the novels, being one of the most powerful Aes Sedai in the whole story, so we're expecting her to be very important in the show too. It's a big win for Coveney, as her first major acting gig.

In April 2022 we learned that Ayoola Smart had been cast as Aviendha, an Aiel Maiden of the Spear.

What is The Wheel of Time season 2 plot?

Events in the first season revealed that the Wheel of Time television series takes elements from different books to help with the flow of the series, rather than following the story from the books in chronological order. This means it can be especially hard to figure out where the show will go next.

Some of the show's actors have dropped hints about the upcoming season during interviews. Kate Fleetwood teased the emergence of Liandrin Guirale's darker side during a panel at JordanCon 2022.

"I've really enjoyed the playfulness of Liandrin" Fleetwood said, "but there's a deeper and a darker side to Liandrin, but also her own personal backstory I've really been able to immerse myself in the second season which has been a real gift... there's definitely some surprises in store in Season 2."

Daniel Henney, who plays al'Lan Mandragoran, has suggested that the second season will be gorier than the first. He said, "it's really hard for me to not give too much away, but I will say this: two swords, multiple Fades, blood….lots of blood."

In a behind the scenes video posted on social media, we saw glimpses of a new desert location. Many suspect this to be the Aiel Waste, which has been hinted at in the show but never shown on screen. The Aiel Waste is a harsh and inhospitable wasteland that only the Aiel people can withstand for extended periods of time. We expect this to be a prominent setpiece in season 2.

Otherwise, we're confident that season two will continue to explore the lineage of the Dragon Born and we will watch Rand evolve as he comes to accept his new role.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Two Rivers gang will continue to struggle to figure out their place in the story. Surely, we'll learn a lot more about Perrin's wolfbrother abilities in the process.

Mat will return to the story (with his new actor) and we expect him to continue his shenanigans with ancient artefacts, in turn revealing more about the past.

We also got a glimpse of the Seanchan in the season one finale. The imposing, seafaring empire is sure to continue to pose a threat in the upcoming season.

The developing love triangle between Lan, Moiraine and Nynaeve will likely see a lot of screen time too.

There is loads to explore, and we can't wait to see where it goes.

Will there be a series 3 of The Wheel of Time?

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Prime Video announced that The Wheel of Time has been officially renewed for Season 3.

Considering season 2 is still yet to hit our screens, it shows a lot of confidence in the show's future.

In an interview with Deadline, the showrunner, Rafe Judkins, said he sees the show running for eight seasons.

"I always have to approach it as if we’re going to get to tell the whole story that’s in the books. If we don't approach it that way, then we'd set ourselves up to not stick the landing and these books have such a good ending."

He continued "I really need to set us up to get there if we’re able to. That's not up to me ultimately. If people watch it and Amazon wants to keep doing more, I’d love to continue to expand this world further."

Is there a trailer for season 2 of The Wheel of Time?

Fans were given a short teaser clip during New York Comic Con 2022. You can watch that below.
