While the Surface Duo and Surface Neo are on the late 2020 slate, we'll almost certainly get other Surface devices around October.
This will almost certainly see Surface Pro and Surface Laptop upgraded since we've already had a new Surface Go 2 and Surface Book 3 launch in early 2020.
The Surface Laptop will almost certainly get a late 2020 performance bump to keep up with rivals. Last year's Surface Laptop 3 was a welcome update but the ultraportable power-laptop space is particularly competitive with Apple's recent MacBook Air move to 10th generation Intel Core processors and a new Dell XPS 13 recently announced, the pressure is on.
We're expecting Surface Laptop 4 to be on the streets in the Autumn at the latest. We also think there will be a Surface Pro 8, hopefully with a redesign this time - the thick bezels are looking a little tired.
Microsoft did say in February 2020 that its Surface business might suffer due to the current global situation, but it was unclear if this meant in terms of launches or it was just referring to sales.
New Surface rumours: What's happened so far?
Here are all the rumours relating to new Surface devices we have heard so far.
14 April 2020 - Surface Book 3 to feature Nvidia Quadro graphics
This would mean some hefty power if true - the Surface Book 3 could come in a version featuring Nvidia Quadro workstation-level graphics. The rumour comes courtesy of a retailer leak to WinFuture which could indicate that the long-overdue Surface Book 3 is imminent. The leak also suggests that Microsoft has opted for Intel Core Comet Lake chips rather than the better Ice Lake 10nm chips. Confusingly, Intel markets both of these under the 10th generation Core banner.
Surface Book 3 may have 32GB of RAM as a default, which would be pretty sweet.
13 April 2020 - Surface Go 2 is nearly here, filing appears at the FCC
The Surface Go 2 has appeared in a filing to the US FCC - Federal Communications Commission - the body that approves wireless devices in the US. This usually indicates that a launch is imminent. Windows Latest suggests it's the Surface Go because it has the same codename seen in a Geekbench listing previously.
13 April 2020 - There's going to be a new Surface Dock 2 with USB-C
At last! The old Surface Dock was a top brick. The only thing is that, because of Microsoft's tardiness in moving the Surface line to USB-C, it relied on good old DisplayPort. However, with the whole lineup now having USB-C it's time for a new Surface Dock 2. Unfortunately, though, we don't know if it will have Thunderbolt. For some reason, Microsoft has been reluctant to equip the Surface line up with Thunderbolt, something which surely has to change with Surface Book 3.
9 April 2020 - Surface Neo will be later than Holiday 2020
The Surface Neo, the bigger double-screen tablet (to the smaller Surface Duo) has apparently been delayed by Microsoft's switch in priorities toward getting the devices' operating system Windows 10X working properly. The move could have knock-on consequences as manufacturers including Lenovo were planning to use Windows 10X on new devices, and may now face delays if the OS isn't ready for implementation.
30 March 2020 - Surface Laptop to get the latest Intel and AMD chips
Microsoft has been testing a Surface Laptop 4 with a 2.7GHz TigerLake-U processor (Intel Core), while other rumours suggested the new laptop could use AMD Ryzen 4000 processors as well.
23 March 2020 - Microsoft Surface Go 2 specs leak hints at new Core m3 and LTE option
It appears we're going to see a new Core m3 powered Surface Go, alongside a machine using a newer generation of Pentium Gold than the first Surface Go.
Specifically, it'll use the Core m3-8100Y and Pentium Gold 4425Y. There could be LTE on board as well.
It's claimed the Core m3 tablet will also feature 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, with 8GB RAM and 128GB on the Pentium Gold version. That's double the storage of the first series of Surface Go.
