Porsche is turning to all-electric technology for its next-generation Macan.

All future vehicles in its compact SUV line will then be electric, so the currently available Porsche Macan and the Macan S will be the last to feature petrol engines.

The new EV version of the Macan will be available "at the start of the next decade".

Porsche will first release the all-electric Porsche Taycan, which is expected for the end of 2019. That will then be followed soon after by a derivative, the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo.

The Macan will sport 800-volt technology, much like the Taycan, and will be based on the Porsche PPE architecture developed in collaboration with Audi. Not much else is know about it at present, but it will go into full production in Leipzig, Germany.

The car is unlikely to be the last EV to be announced by Porsche in the coming year. The company's chairman of the board of management, Oliver Blume, revealed that there are plans to invest heavily in the technology and we could even see half Porsche's output be all-electric in the next six years. Even sports cars: "By 2022 we will be investing more than €6 billion in electric mobility, and by 2025 50 per cent of all new Porsche vehicles could have an electric drive system," he said.

"Nevertheless, over the next ten years we will focus on a drive mix consisting of even further optimised petrol engines, plug-in hybrid models, and purely electrically operated sports cars."
