The original Spectre x360 saw HP assert its strengths in the laptop market. It was, and is, one great looking, great functioning laptop. For 2016 it's gone one better for the refresh by incorporating a 13.3-inch OLED panel into the design.

Our quick take

FORAGAINST

And boy does it look good. Black levels on the latest x360 are exceptional, almost blending into the side bezel of the machine itself. Resolution is ultra-high too, with a 2,560 x 1,440 resolution panel ensuring the crispest of images. It is, in short, one of the best laptop screens we've ever seen.

In addition, the special edition model we saw at the CES 2016 had a premium finish, including laser-etched Hewlett Packard logo to the front, revealing the brassy-colour metal beneath the black exterior. Such a finish adds a price premium, but fickle as we are we'd pay the difference for something that looks this good.

As ever the HP Spectre x360 is, as that 360 name suggests, a versatile laptop. Its screen is capable of flipping all the way around the body, to be positioned as a laptop, standalone "tent", or tablet-esque device. The hinge holds rigidly and is a more traditional two piece design than, say, the multiple-threaded one of the Lenovo Yoga 900S, yet still ensures a slim build at just 16mm.

Elsewhere the design doesn't differ from the original x360, but given the success of that laptop we couldn't ask for more. The spec skinny includes Intel Core i5 or i7 processors with Iris graphics, up to 16GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, Bang & Olufsen audio, USB 3.0 (and a 2.0), mini display port, HDMI and audio jack.

If you're after a premium Windows 10 machine then, from what we've seen, the HP Spectre x360 makes a strong case against the likes of the Dell XPS 13. Indeed it might be the best looking laptop ever, even if it will cost close to a grand.
