(Pocket-lint) - The OnePlus smartwatch has something of a long history. Up until 2019, it was a "will they, won't they" rumour that had trundled along for years. But with the company confirming that the watch is indeed being put into production, it's now more than just a rumour.

While there are plenty of unknowns, we've heard plenty about the OnePlus Watch, and as more information creeps in we'll continue updating.

Release date and price

  • 23 March 2021 launch event
  • It will be 'affordable'

The OnePlus Watch is going to be unveiled alongside the OnePlus 9 phone series on 23 March.

OnePlus CEO confirmed the launch date in a forum post, while also stating what some of the features would be. This follows on from some official teasing on Twitter from late 2020.

In addition to that, the watch has two model numbers which have been spotted on Indian certification site, BIS, indicating that an India launch will be happening in the near future.

No pricing has been revealed yet, but OnePlus has stated that it will be "affordable", and given that Oppo - its sibling company - launched watches in the sub-£300 price bracket, we wouldn't be surprised to see it being considerably less than that.

  • Premium material
  • Round design confirmed
  • Patent leak shows us two different strap versions

Because OnePlus just can't help itself when it comes to teasing us with little snippets of information, the company's CEO teased the design of the watch on Twitter showing images of a shiny round frame. In the tweet he says that it's a material that's "never before seen in a smartwatch".

The first image in that tweet looks suspiciously like graphite 'lead' found inside most standard pencils, so could OnePlus be creating a watch frame from a metal-graphite alloy?

The design has now been confirmed by Unbox Therapy - OnePlus can't help itself having big name YouTubers reveal its plans early - confirming that round design, while also showing one of the straps seen in earlier sketches.

In February 2021, a leaked patent filing revealed that the OnePlus Watch could appear in two different variations. The details are a little thin - as shown below, this simply shows us the outline of the devices - but it does fit with details that have subsequently been confirmed.

This round bezel would see the company take a different approach to Oppo. Its sister company's smartwatches are rounded squares and look a lot closer to Apple Watch, bringing a square screen to the Wear OS market where most watches are currently round.

Features and specs

  • 46mm case and IP68 rated
  • 4GB storage
  • Control OnePlus TV
  • Fitness, sleep, stress, SpO2 and HR monitoring
  • Notifications from phone

One key message from OnePlus throughout 2020 was its desire to bring a sense of cohesion between various product categories. Essentially making lots of product types that speak to each other, whether that be TVs, headphones, watches or smartphones.

In an interview about the upcoming smartwatch, the company's CEO said, "What we’re trying to do is work with Google to try to improve the connectivity between the Wear OS ecosystem, Android TV, and Android smartphones to create this ability for better device interoperability across the ecosystems."

However, while the company said it wanted to improve Wear OS, it has since decided that it's going to launch the watch on its smartwatch operating system. Because: battery life.

Pete Lau, the company CEO stated in a community forum reply that the company opted to go with its own operating system to solve the biggest problem with Wear OS smartwatches, and that's battery.

He also stated that it will work as an easy remote control for your OnePlus TV if you're in a market that has those.

As for other specs, nothing is official but regular leaker Ishan Agarwal has shared a few bits that seem to place this as a competitor to the Huawei Watch GT series.

If accurate, it'll give you all the fitness tracking sensors you need as well as featuring a water and dust-tight design to make sure it stays alive if you go running in the rain.
