Google's been pretty quiet on the Chromecast front in the last couple of years, but it looks like a new version of its popular Chromecast Ultra could be on the way, with an all-new remote to bring to the table.

Some claim that it will run a new version of Android TV (or whatever that is renamed), with full app and Google Play support. And, there is even a rumour that it will be rebranded to Nest Chromecast or similar.

Initial indications pointed towards a Google I/O unveiling for the new iteration of Google's TV dongle, but as that was one of the many tech events this year to have been cancelled, it's more likely to receive a softer launch now.

They originally came about because two devices were spotted on the website of Taiwan's certification agency, the NCC, which is much like the FCC in the US. It approves devices for consumer release in Taiwan, based on their communications tech.

One was for a "Dongle", the other for a "Remote". These are sufficiently vague that they could be other products, but Google's dongle history surely points toward a new Chromecast.

That tallied with existing rumours about the new Chromecast Ultra sporting a remote - lending credence to some of the other details being touted, including the fact that this remote will have a dedicated Google Assistant button, and that the Chromecast will manage 4K HDR video.

Another rumour now states that it will come with a new software front-end too, with Protocol's sources claiming it could sport Android TV and even adopt the Nest branding Google now uses for its Home products.

Add to that the fact that code inside the latest version of Google's cloud gaming platform, Stadia, now contains reference to Android TV use (it currently only supports Chromecast Ultra on TVs), and you can start to put the pieces of the puzzle in place.

We should find out more in the coming weeks as the products previously expected for Google I/O start to appear.
