The next superhero-offering from Marvel timeline is upon us, with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiering on 19 March 2021. The show revolves around Captain America's two former sidekicks as they deal with the loss of Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame.

Also: What to watch before The Falcon and The Winter Soldier airs

This is the second Disney+ venture from Marvel, following its hit WandaVision series that debuted in January 2021. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was originally slated to come to Disney+ first but was delayed from its original August 2020 release date. Considering the series was created with the idea that it would air first, it wouldn't shock us if there are major firework moments from the start.

The series is set well after the events of WandaVision, which occurred in the days and weeks following the return of everyone who was snapped away in the Blip. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier's director and head writer specifically revealed the series is set about six months after the Blip, which allows it to explore some of the unforeseen consequences of half the world's population returning in an instant.

Disney+ - £7.99/m or £79.90/yr

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier: What to expect

Here is a roundup of plot rumours and other interesting tidbits about the show, all gleaned from Marvel itself or eagle-eyed MCU watchers:

Mackie and Stan

A major focus of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier series is about the titular characters coming to grips with their new roles in a world without Captain America. Actors Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan are slated to reprise their roles as Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, aka The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, respectively. They were important in the last two Captain America films.

Their new Disney+ TV series is considered a wider part of the MCU.

Six-episode run

The show is slated to run for six episodes and is being billed as a limited series, although Marvel President Kevin Feige has stated that another season is a possibility while also making clear nothing is currently in the works. Marvel has a pretty full slate of content planned for Disney's streaming platform. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is the second of five series planned for 2021.

One difference between The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and other Disney+ hits like WandaVision and the Star Wars Universe's Mandalorian is that the new show will have a little bit longer run time, with the new series having episodes that run from 45 minutes to 55 minutes as opposed to the 30-minute episode blocks that Disney+ has used on other major shows.

US Agent debuts

Wyatt Russell has been confirmed to appear as John Walker, aka US Agent, a uber-patriot who often ends up as an antagonist to Captain America in the comics. Current rumours have suggested Walker will be the US government's choice to replace Captain America instead of Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, who received Captain America’s Shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

Another interesting point to consider: In the comics, Walker was trained by Taskmaster, the villain in the upcoming Black Widow film.

Purple-masked Zemo

You may remember Daniel Bruhl’s Zemo from Civil War. He was just a regular man with no superpowers bent on revenge against the Avengers. He blamed them for the death of his family. Well, he is slated to return as the villain. Zemo will sport the purple mask he is known for wearing in Marvel Comics. This should be interesting for Barnes, as Zemo manipulated him in Civil War.

Flag-Smasher

Flag-Smasher is one of Captain America's comic book adversaries, and it's looking like the character will debut in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, although recent trailers point to the character being gender-swapped. In the comics, Flag-Smasher is Karl Morgenthau, the son of a wealthy Swiss banker who uses daddy's money to wage war on the concept of national pride.

In the new series, however, it appears that Erin Kellyman might play a female version of the character, named Karli Morgenthau.

We don't know much else about how the character will be deployed in the series, but between Morgenthau, Baron Zemo, and US Agent, there should be no shortage of bad guys for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier to face in six episodes.

Sharon Carter returns

Another returning actor from the two previous Captain America films is Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter.

Of course, the last time we saw her, in Civil War, she shared a kiss with Captain America, who is now her great uncle through marriage if we correctly followed the Endgame time-travel stuff. Kinda gross.

Chris Evans

This leads us to a big question that fans have been wondering: Will we get to see one more scene of Chris Evans as old man Steve Rodgers, like we saw at the end of Endgame? The actor himself shot down rumours of a cameo, but that hasn’t stopped the internet from running rampant about seeing America's butt once more. Rumours have again picked up steam due to a leak of the first episode title.

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier: Cast and crew

We discussed this in detail via the section above, but here's a summary of the cast and crew members confirmed so far for season one:

  • Anthony Mackie - The Falcon aka Sam Wilson
  • Sebastian Stan - The Winter Soldier aka Bucky Barnes
  • Daniel Bruhl - Baron Helmut Zemo
  • Emily VanCamp - Sharon Carter
