A 4K remaster of N64 classic GoldenEye 007 has been confirmed by original developer Rare. It will be available to Xbox console owners soon.

It is "coming soon" for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S, and will feature achievements, a 4K resolution and smoother frame rates.

Rare confirmed the game in a tweet on its official account, but doesn't yet say when it'll arrive. Xbox itself also confirmed that it'll be released on Game Pass from day one.

And, if that's not exciting enough, Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members will be getting a ported version of the N64 original too. But this time with online multiplayer support.

It seems that Rare's owner, Microsoft, has finally managed to cut through the legal red tape that had prevented the game from a rerelease all these years.

First released for the N64 in 1997, GoldenEye 007 became an instant hit for its clever FPS campaign and, more importantly, split-screen multiplayer mode. It is considered by some as one of the best shooters of all time, if not the best game overall.

But, due to rights over Bond and Bond games being held by multiple licensees, it has never been successfully released for another platform. A new game - GoldenEye 007: Reloaded - hit shelves in 2011, but was nowhere near as good.

A failed Xbox 360 remastered version of the original did leak online not too long ago, but that version never made it to a full consumer release. Now we're getting the game we've been waiting decades for, at last.
