The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact will cost £449 SIM free, with pre-orders open at for those interested in getting their hands on the new smaller format handset.

The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact was announced at CES 2014 in Las Vegas, offering most of the same specifications as Sony's flagship Xperia Z1, but with a smaller 4.3-inch display. It takes a hit in resolution at 1280 x 720 pixels, but you get the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, waterproofing, 20-megapixel camera and all the rest.

Our first impressions having played with the handset is that it's much more manageable than the larger Sony Xperia Z1, although with the flagship device's price dropping to £479 SIM free, there's now only £30 difference in price between these two handsets.

If you choose to pre-order direct from Sony, it'll throw in the Sony SmartWatch 2 as a free bonus! The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact is also available from Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4u. We're keeping track of the deals in our feature right here. The Sony Xperia Z1 Compact will be available from the end of February.
