Nokia researchers have been busy in their labs lately. The Finnish company has announced new technology dubbed Wibree that will work with or rival Bluetooth for short-range wireless connectivity.
According to Nokia, the new radio technology needs a fraction of the power that other radio technologies do, and is therefore ideal for integration in small devices. It’s also compatible with Bluetooth solutions.
It can offer connectivity between mobile devices and PCs, and small watches or wireless keyboards.
Nokia is keen to finalise the final interoperability specification of Wibree, and this will be made available to the industry through an open forum. The company is keen to have the first commercial version of the specification available by the second quarter of next year.
Wibree has a 10m range and a data rate of 1Mbps.
