Google on Monday announced a Google Play Edition of the Moto G. It's now available in the US for $179 for the 8GB model and $199 for the 16GB model, the same pricing as the versions sold by Motorola.

Like other Google Play Edition handsets, the Moto G through Google removes any software additions by Motorola and comes with the latest version of stock Android. It's a GSM handset, meaning it will work on AT&T and T-Mobile stateside.

Motorola doesn't add much to the Android software other than its own apps, and the company has been relatively quick (a month or so) to update its handsets with the latest version of Android. We wouldn't call the Moto G a handset that exactly needs a Google Play Edition.

However, if you see yourself wanting a Moto G with Google's distinct blessing, the Moto G Google Play Edition might be for you.
