LG has experienced reasonable success with its Android smartphones in the past, with the LG G2 being critically well received if not a massive seller. But the LG G3 has been the breakthrough product for the company as it posted healthy profits in the second quarter financial year 2014, largely down to strong smartphone sales.

The company shipped a record high 14.5 million smartphones in the quarter, a 20 per cent increase year on year. And 4G LTE products made up a healthy amount of those - more than one-third.

In sales terms, that represents a 16 per cent rise (as shipped devices aren't always sold in the same period) earning revenues for the mobile devices division of $3.51 billion (£2 billion). The division made $82.4 million profit for the quarter, putting an end to three consecutive quarters of losses.

"Much of the success was due to the initial popularity of the LG G3 in the Korean market," says LG. "LG plans to continue its global rollout of the G3 and introduce more mass tier products in the second half, including variations of the LG G3."

LG has recently announced the LG G3 Beat - a cheaper, smaller and esser powered version of the handset that will be named LG G3 s in the UK.

The TV department has also performed well with LG expecting a rise in the popularity of Ultra HD 4K TVs over the coming months.
