Huawei is getting ready to launch the Ascend P7's successor: the Ascend P8.

The company has already confirmed that the new flagship will launch at a global event in April and it's thought that it will come with the latest generation of HiSilicon chipset, along with some other impressive specs.

Huawei has been teasing elements of the Ascend P8 on its official Twitter page but details are still pretty thin on the ground and leaks have been quite minimal in comparison to other upcoming flagship devices like the LG G4. That said, we've rounded up all the Huawei Ascend P8 rumours and leaks in one place, and tried to decode the Huawei teasers to give you a taste of what might be coming on the new handset.

Keep in mind nothing has been confirmed yet, other than the event date, but here is everything you need to know about the Huawei Ascend P8 with a sprinkle of salt ahead of its launch.

Huawei Ascend P8 release date and pricing

Huawei told Pocket-lint back in January during a media tour to its HQ in China that it would be announcing its new flagship smartphone in London on 15 April.

The company has since sent out invitations to members of the press for the event and it has been counting down the days until the launch on its Twitter page. The event will take place between 15.00 and 16.30 and you'll be able to join the livestream feed at

We weren't given any more information on the device itself other than its launch date, but reports have estimated the price of the Ascend P8 will sit at around 2999 CNY, which converts to around £330. There has also been a rumour to suggest the Ascend P8 Lite will launch at the same event.

Huawei Ascend P8 design

The Huawei Ascend P series has always featured premium design elements and the leaks surrounding this latest device have suggested the company is staying true to this strategy. Joonsuh Kim, SVP of Huawei's mobile ID team told us that the P Series is about "absolute beauty" so we suspect the new flagship will be following this mantra. If its predecessor is anything to go by, another super slim and light device will be arriving in the form of the Ascend P8.

According to the rumours, the Ascend P8 will reportedly feature a metal chassis and a ceramic back. Onleaks posted an image of what he claimed is a prototype Ascend P8. It revealed only a small portion of the phone's rear, showing off a metal frame with chamfered edges, and the French leaker also claimed the device would measure 144.9mm x 72.2mm x 6.6mm. If true, it would mean the Ascend P8 will be slightly larger and thicker than the Ascend P7, which measured 139.8mm tall, 68.8mm wide, and 6.5mm thick.

In a separate leak, a schematic design document that supposedly came from a factory in which the P8 is assembled, revealed the P8 will have a slightly-curved housing that was claimed to measure 144.9mm, 71.9mm wide (excluding side buttons), and 6.6mm thick. While this supports the measurement claim made by Onleaks, we would be surprised to see the Huawei go thicker and not thinner, even if only by 0.1 of a millimetre.

Another leaker on Twitter posted a third image that reportedly gives a better look at the phone's bottom edge. The smartphone in the image can be seen underneath a protective case, but it's obvious that the phone's chassis looks thin and it also appears to be heading down the full metal body route like the iPhone 6 and HTC One M9.

More recently, an image was published by nowhereelse claiming to show a leaked billboard that if legitimate, shows the Ascend P8 in all its glory. The image presents the P8 in four colour variants, as well as reveal the more affordable P8 Lite, which it has been called by the source. From the image, it looks as though the P8 and P8 Lite will feature a lovely slim design, with rounded edges and they will reportedly be available in black, white, silver and gold colours.

Huawei's own Twitter page offers even more hints at what we can expect from the Ascend P8. While no specifics or images of the device itself are revealed, the Chinese company does suggest there are some exciting things to look forward to on the Ascend P8. Several teaser adverts have been tweeted, all of which have the number "8" hidden within them, the hashtag "make it possible" and an accompanying tagline under the words "with light".

The "with light" element could suggest several things, one of which is a big camera focus for the new device but it could also refer to the weight, as well as perhaps the idea of taking some of the limelight from its competitors. The taglines that follow are even more interesting however, with several hinting at various design features. The company has posted a number of images over the last few weeks including "we celebrate the finest craftsmanship", "we embrace edgy innovations" and "we feel the pulse of life".

We would guess the "finest craftsmanship" tagline means we can expect to see a metal body rather than plastic, supported by the leaks we mentioned previously, while the "edgy innovations" could suggest a very thin bezel for the Ascend P8.

Given Huawei's latest launch into wearables at Mobile World Congress, we would guess that the "feel the pulse of life" tagline suggests the Ascend P8 will have the ability to read your heart rate or offer some sort of fitness element. The latest image tweeted by Huawei reads "Salute to Prometheus" and invites you to "embark on a journey of light", referring to the Greek God who gave humanity the gift of fire - an interesting approach if nothing else.

Huawei Ascend P8 display

The Huawei Ascend P8 is rumoured to feature a 5.2-inch 1080p screen with a pixel density of 424ppi, but again, the company teased a collection of images back in the middle of March that include a few more hints as to what else we can expect. Just like the images teased on Twitter more recently, the previous collection of images centred around the number 8.

One photo showed an 8 made of what appears to be mirrored glass, but it seems to be cracked at the top and solid at the bottom. This would suggest we will see an improved glass on the Ascend P8 display. Samsung recently introduced Gorilla Glass 4 on its Galaxy S6 so perhaps Huawei will also be using Corning's latest glass.

Additionally, the display panel will apparently fall into the 2.5D type according to Onleaks, meaning it will have tapered edges like on the iPhone 6.

Huawei Ascend P8 hardware

A report from MyDrivers claimed the 16nm FinFET Huawei Octa-core Kirin 930 processor from TSMC will power the Ascend P8, but we're skeptical of that, considering TSMC won't start shipping the advanced silicon until late 2015.

There haven't been many other leaks regarding the hardware and the images posted on Huawei's Twitter page don't give much away in this area either. One thing that did catch our attention was the "Salute to Prometheus" image as the "8" symbol has been tipped horizontal to display an infinity logo. Of course, no smartphone has an infinite battery so this could mean nothing in terms of power, but with a bit of luck it's a hint that the P8 will provide us with lots of juice. We can hope at least, even if we are clutching at straws a little there.

Huawei Ascend P8 camera

When Huawei teased its upcoming handsets with a collection of photos centered around the number 8, it included a photo that showed a camera lens making up part of the 8. Rumours have therefore suggested we can expect an upgraded rear snapper. A 13-megapixel camera has been speculated, but it looks as though we can hope for a little more in terms of intelligence following the Twitter image posts by Huawei.

The "with light" campaign mentioned previously has several taglines to what we suspect refers to the Ascend P8's camera. One image has the phrase "we capture the best you", which we would guess means an improved front-facing snapper, while the "we broaden horizons" could suggest a wide-angle lens is on its way in the new flagship.

There is also an image with the tagline "we explore fantasy and dreams", which could mean the camera will offer some creative control, while another image read "we brighten the diversity of life around us" and referred to different lenses in tweet itself. Another read "we enable you to see the unseen", which could perhaps refer to better low light shots.

There may not be any concrete numbers or information regarding the camera or the device itself, but the Huawei Twitter campaign is certainly good fun for guessing what could be coming on the Ascend P8.

Pocket-lint will be reporting from Huawei's London event, so keep checking back for all the latest Ascend P8 news. You can also check out our Huawei hub for more information.
