"We're not announcing a Gphone" states the Google blog. But what it being officially announced is the Open Handset Alliance and "Android", the name the platform has been given, the blog states:
"More significant and ambitious than a single phone. In fact, through the joint efforts of the members of the Open Handset Alliance, we hope Android will be the foundation for many new phones and will create an entirely new mobile experience for users, with new applications and new capabilities we can’t imagine today."
The blog states that Android is the "first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices" and will include an operating system, a user-interface and applications.
The blog promises an SDK for developers within a week, but says obviously the wait for consumers will be a little longer with some partners aiming for the second half of 2008 to ship phones based on the Android platform.
