HTC has released a ROM update for Orange customers using the newly launched HTC Hero.

Although the official HTC update has been available for almost a week for Hero owners who bought the phone outside of an Orange or T-Mobile contract in the UK, the two UK carriers of the handset appear to be dragging their heels, claiming they were still testing the new update.

On the 17 September T-Mobile told us: "The update is currently being tested and will be issued to customers when it is ready. There is no indication of a time frame for this as yet, but we will let you know as soon as we have any more information".

Although the Orange website still seems to be silent on the availability of the new update, HTC has added a link to the Orange specific update on its support pages.

The ROM update promises to increase the performance of the phone dramatically, although doesn't add any new features or services.

Users will require a PC to install the update and should note that doing so wipes all the data from the phone.

At the rime of writing T-Mobile has yet to make its G2 update available.
