Carphone Warehouse says digital camera is dead - we doubt it

The Carphone Warehouse's UK Chief Executive, Andrew Harrison, today cautioned the future success of digital cameras. “Cameraphones now make up over 70% of mobile phone sales, with 2 megapixel cameraphones due to hit the market later this year. The future's cameraphones, not digital cameras." said Mr Harrison.

The independent mobile phone retailer issued its third quarter trading update yesterday, which included sales of 1.4 million cameraphones.

Pentax, although providing digital cameras for some of Samsung's mobile phone models, believe like us diffently:

“Although camera-phones are becoming increasingly sophisticated, Pentax feels that due to the requirement to perform multiple tasks, they will not compete with dedicated digital cameras, either in terms of overall functionality or ease of use. In serving different needs for consumers, Pentax anticipates that camera-phones and digital cameras will co-exist as complementary technologies.”
