Cross-platform BlackBerry BBM messaging was announced by CEO Thorsten Heins on stage at the BlackBerry Live conference in May, with the promise of it landing by the end of the summer. Now in the heat of the season, BlackBerry looks to be ramping up for the mass release with the first BBM for iOS and Android beta.

A small number of users are getting the chance to test out the Android, and iOS versions of BBM, publication BlackBerryOS first noted. It's not a mass beta, rolling out only to a subset of users under Eligible Programs. BlackBerry requires BBM for Android users to be running Android 4.0 and BBM for iPhone requires iOS 6, which will be the case when the official version launches in the next few months.

"We are committed to making BBM on other platforms as fully featured as we can," Heins explained in May, keen to emphasise that the messaging service would still be best on BlackBerry's own handsets. Messaging and groups will be available on the Android and iOS versions, with video and screen sharing coming later in the year.
