Holding out for a 10-inch version of the BlackBerry PlayBook? Well don't expect to be getting your hands on it anytime soon, despite earlier rumours suggesting it could land this year.

The reason for the no-show? A BlackBerry smartphone packing the QNX OS that's what.

N4BB is reporting that RIM has shelved the PlayBook 2 plans in favour of the new handset - which should pack the same single-core 1.2GHz processor as the BlackBerry Bold 9900.

We'd be surprised to see a QNX device rocking up on a single-core device, but the suggestions for its inclusion is that the dual-core chip used in the original PlayBook would be too much trouble for a smaller battery.

Other rumoured specs for the QNX smartphone include a 4.3-inch touchscreen with a "900+" resolution.

We know that a 4G version of the 7-inch QNX slate will be landing at some time this year and N4BB seems to think that the release date for this has been pushed to October (we were expecting it in the summer).

Nothing official as of yet, you understand, but we'll endeavour to keep you posted with anything further we hear.
