Folding phones were all the rage during Mobile World Congress 2019, but despite all the announcements at and around the show, there's one company we're all watching: Apple.

Apple is rumoured to be considering a folding device. These rumours kickstarted after Apple filed a couple of patents for foldable phones but many patents don't see the light of day and we still aren't convinced Apple will launch a folding phone. We certainly don't expect it in 2019 anyway.

Apple's co-founder Steve Wozniak hits the nail on the head in a TV interview with Bloomberg: "Apple has been a leader for quite a long time in a few areas such as Touch ID, facial ID, and easy payment with the phone. They're not the leader in areas like the folding phone".

Wozniak added: "And that worries me because I really do want a folding phone." Us too, but we'd rather they didn't cost £2000 with a crease in the middle, and an Apple foldable phone is likely to cost at least £2000 (hopefully without a crease or gritty hinge though).

We don't expect to see an Apple foldable phone anytime soon, but Wozniak rightly points out in the interview: "Apple always has surprises, working on a lot of things in the background."

We suspect we will be waiting till at least 2020 though and even that feels like a bit of a pipe dream for now. Chances are the company will wait to see if the foldable smartphone trend takes off, leaving rivals like Samsung and Huawei to test the market first, as they will be doing later this year when the Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X launch.
