NEC has developed a prototype HSDPA mobile phone handset, which it is to demo at the mobile phone expo 3GSM next week in Barcelona.

The jointly developed phone with NTT DoCoMo, with use HSDPA services to offer download speeds of up to 3.6Mbps on the move, a rate almost ten times faster than that of present 3G.

Scheduled for the second quarter of 2006, the service in theory will be able to offer high speed downloads of up to 14Mbps in the future.

The phone will enable the download of large volumes of data and the browsing of rich contents, and is expected to realize a whole new and advanced range of uses in the future.

The new working prototype will be displayed at the booths of both NTT DoCoMo and NEC at 3GSM World Congress 2006, being held from February 13 to 16, 2006.
