BT has announced a second generation of its Android-based home phone that adds Google Play so you can download apps and play them in the house, much like you would do on a mobile device.

The BT Home SmartPhone S II offers almost the same Android experience as a mobile phone, but for your landline instead. That means you can't take it out of the house, but can still email, use other Google services, and download apps to its 2GB of storage.

It comes with a 3.5-inch touchscreen and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean running the show, plus there's a front-facing camera so it can be used to make Skype or other forms of video calls. It connects to your home Wi-Fi as well as a land phone line for voice calling. And numbers published on websites can be tapped to call instantly.

Video and music players come pre-installed, along with TuneIn Radio for internet radio playback. And because it is a home phone, you also get the benefit of BT's nuisance call blocking feature, which blocks 80 per cent of nuisance calls.

The BT Home SmartPhone S II is now available through BT's own online store for £169.99.
