(Pocket-lint) - With the pace of smartphone evolution moving so fast, there's always something waiting in the wings. No sooner have you spied the latest handset, that there's anticipation for the next big thing.

Here we look at those phones that haven't yet launched, the upcoming phones for 2022. We'll be updating this list on a regular basis, with those device rumours we think are credible and exciting.

As for already-launched handsets, we've rounded up the best smartphones for 2022 elsewhere - those we consider to be the best across all platforms. If your budget is a little smaller, there is also our budget smartphones for under £200 feature - and there's a mid-range roundup up to £400 as well

Before we dive into the detail, here are some of the anticipated handsets for 2022:

The Motorola Frontier is thought to be a flagship level phone from Moto, with a 194-megapixel main camera, 6.7-inch display with 144Hz and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 power at its heart. Rumours say it might not appear until July 2022.

Vivo

Vivo has confirmed that the X80 series will launch in China on 25 April, but there's no word on a global launch. There's a Zeiss camera on the rear, but we're expecting MediaTek Dimensity 9000 power, 80W charging and Android 12, with a 6.78in AMOLED display.

Although there have been many rumours surrounding a Nokia 9 PureView replacement, the trail seems to have gone cold, instead suggesting that Nokia might launch a Nokia 8.3 replacement with five cameras - and possibly called the Nokia X50. This could have a 6.5-inch display, run Snapdragon 700 series hardware and have a 108-megapixel main camera. We're now looking at a 2022 launch.

Nothing

Carl Pei's new company Nothing is planning to launch a smartphone, called Nothing phone (1). The timeline for launch isn't clear, but we're expecting it in summer 2022. It will be powered by Qualcomm, run Android and offer a minimalist take with no bloatware. We're expecting it to have a translucent back.

While Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi 12 at Mobile World Congress, rumour has it there's a Xiaomi 12 Ultra in the works and it could be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus. It's expected to launch in Q3 2022.

Samsung is expected to announced the Galaxy Z Fold 4 with a big event in 2022. We're expecting much the same size and design as the Z Fold 3, but it will reportedly be slimmer. We're expecting a big push on this phone, but we're not expecting it to include the S Pen.

Google

Google has made the unpredictable move of confirming the design of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. The camera bar on the back is now aluminium like the rest of the frame - and we're also expecting this phone to launch with Tensor 2. The tease was made at Google I/O 2022 - but the launch date isn't expected until October 2022.

With Apple using a 2-year design cycle, the iPhone 14 should bring with it an all-new design. That might see the opportunity to remove the notch and offer a punchhole camera and in-display Touch ID. We'd expect an October announcement as normal.

News of a folding Pixel first appeared in 2019, with a second leak in 2020 suggesting that the codename was Passport, and that it would be launched in Q4 2021. That didn't happen, but rumours now suggest it will launch in 2022.
