(Pocket-lint) - LeapFrog has updated its LeapPad kids tablet with the launch of the LeaPad2 and we've managed to have a quick play at a couple of recent events in London ahead of the UK launch.

The new LeapPad2 includes a higher-resolution front and rear camera, packs a faster processor, has better memory capability, improved battery life, and new exclusive engaging content to help children learn while having fun – hey, kids want upgrades too.

In reality and all those upgrades do actually make a difference. The LeapPad2 now feeling zippier in use when we've played with it. It turns on quicker, Apps load quicker, and in game functions run quicker.

If you are trying to outsmart your 5-year-old the new LeapPad2 features a new, faster LF 2000 processor, double the memory (4 GB) and improved battery life. There is also now an optional rechargeable battery pack to save you having to buy AA batteries all the time.

But it's not just about a spec boost to enhance the experience, LeapFrog has developed new apps for the tablet too.

There are two new apps: Cartoon Director and Art Studio alongside those previously available like the fun camera app and a colouring in app to use with the stylus.

Cartoon Director allows you to snap a friend or family member and then put their head directly into a story before recording their own voiceover. It looks like great fun and we are sure our kids will enjoy it when we get the LeapPad2 in for a full review.

Thankfully software and games for the original model will work for the new device too.

While the LeapFrog LeapPad2 won't be welcomed by kids who are already playing with your iPad, it is suitable for those who either don't have access, or who you don't want to have access to your favourite Apple tablet. It's a fraction of the cost, considerably more robust, and with LeapFrog's fantastic learning apps, considerably more educational.

LeapPad2 will be sold at RRP £89.99 and is recommended for children 3 to 9 years. It will go on sale in the UK, Ireland, US and Canada from early August. Those who are desperate to get the new model will be able to pre-order the new tablet from 18 July.
