Nerf has released two new top of the range Nerf weapons, but which one should you go for? We've been shooting to find out.

Nerf Mega Thunderbow

Katniss Everdeen has a lot to answer for doesn't she? The latest Nerf weapon, you see, is a bow and dart combo that lets you ditch the blaster look and go old school and silent.

Dubbed the Nerf N-Strike Elite Mega ThunderBow blaster, yes a mouthfull if ever there was one, the idea is that you load up five Mega Darts into the launcher and then by pulling back the bow string launch the whistling darts through the air at unsuspecting targets up to 24 metres away.

In practice and it is incredibly easy to use with the bow elements moving backwards as the string is pulled. Letting go, works just like a real bow sending the dart flying through the air.

With only five darts you do have to be sparing with your shots (we've already lost a couple of the darts), but the larger dart size delivers a more powerful punch, or so says Mum when she got hit by one.

There are no batteries required, although you will need some strength (8 year olds and older should be fine, but younger kids may struggle).

If you are trying to get into the hunger games feel, or just keen not to have yet another blaster in the house this is a great way to have something different. It doesn't have the same firepower as a blaster, of course, but it also feels a lot more different shooting it too.

Nerf Demolisher 2-in-1

It's blasting time. That's bound to be the first words that you say when you pick up the Nerf Demolisher 2-in-1 blaster that lets you fire small darts and larger missles as your foe. It certainly was the first words we said when picking up the N-Strike Elite Demolisher 2-in-1.

Costing £44.99, the new Strike Elite weapon from Hasbro is mainly a semi-automatic rifle that takes a magazine of 10 Nerf darts. The weapon can shoot up to 10 elite darts at a time at a range of around 25 metres.

Powered by four AA batteries, the darts fire at a consistent rate meaning any attacking forces will be pummelled in a hail of ammunition. Failing that, you can fire two giant missiles at them using the pump action air pressured launcher at the based on the main chamber.

A detachable shoulder butt, which also doubles as the carry spot for one the of the missiles completes the design.

Hasbro claim this is the first two in one blaster, which we have to admit shocked us, especially growing up with films like Aliens, Commando, and pretty much every action movie from the 80s and 90s. Regardless we welcome the new addition to the Nerf range.

In practice and it's great fun, although the darts, stored in a magazine, do run out quickly and having more would have been handy. It's also worth pointing out that the targeting if fairly accurate too, well so says our 6 year old tester. Now where is that ammo cream, it's time to pretend we are Arnold.
