The mega stands for mega darts, new bigger Nerf darts that will work only with Mega branded Nerf guns. That's exactly what the Nerf N-Strike Elite Mega Centurion blaster (£34.99) takes, to let you to hit your target a whopping 23 meters away, as long as it's a calm wind-free day.

That is the premise to the new blaster from Nerf. It is long, bright orange, and certainly packs a punch allowing you to hit your opponent before you even get to see the whites of their eyes.

How you like your Nerf play will decide whether or not that's for you - this really is sniper territory and not much else.

The long-range orange blaster is long itself and to help you sturdy the blaster it comes with removable bipod legs just like a a sniper rifle in those movies you watch where they are up in the mountain observing a drug deal go down.  A 6-Nerf dart magazine completes the set-up.

Of course all that firepower comes with limitations and restrictions.

If you don't get them from long range - you have six chances before having to reload - you can forget about getting them short range. The Nerf N-Strike Elite Mega Centurion has a loading mechanism like the real-life L115A1 sniper rifle used by the Royal Marines.

As with the real thing, it is a long-winded procedure involving having to cock the weapon back and push the pin forward again before releasing the trigger. That's what gives the blaster its incredibly long range though, so its needed.

Up close and as you can imagine you don't really have time to do this, especially if you are under fire from someone with a Nerf Rapidstrike CS-18 that doesn't have the range, but fires a ridiculous 18 rounds in six seconds.

Even if you do manage to hit them from afar, you should be prepared to lose darts along the way. The darts go so far we've found (in testing of course) they're quickly over neighbours fences, in bushes, basically anywhere and everywhere.

Those looking to gadget up the Nerf N-Strike Elite Mega Centurion can get the optional extra Battle App Tactical Rail Mount that lets you slip in an iPod touch or iPhone and use it as a targeting camera with the accompanying free app.  

The app, which we've not been able to try, will let you review mission briefs, activate the rangefinder to gauge the distance to your target, and even record the battle, all from your blaster.

Still, if you like playing the sniper, want to get your foe without getting dirty, other than in camo obviously, then this is great fun. Our recommendation though is buy more darts - probably exactly what Nerf would want us to say.
