OnePlus officially revealed all the details surrounding the OnePlus 7T at an event on 26 September. The device succeeds the OnePlus 7 - which is just four months old - but how do the two devices compare and what differences are there between them?
This is how the OnePlus 7T stacks up against the OnePlus 7 to help you work out which you should buy, or whether you should upgrade.

What's the same between the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7?

The OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7 differ quite a lot (surprisingly), with only a couple of elements the same.
The OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7 are offered in the same storage options of 128GB and 256GB and they both have the same 16-megapixel front camera.
Software is also the same, with the two devices running Oxygen OS over the top of Android, though the OnePlus 7T has a couple of extra software functions, such as better slow motion video, for example. It also launches on Android 10, while the OnePlus 7 will need an update to run on Android 10.
What's different between the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7?
As mentioned, the OnePlus 7T differs quite a lot compared to its predecessor.
Design

The OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7 differ in design. The 7T has a triple rear camera in a circular camera housing, while the OnePlus 7 has a dual camera in a slim vertical housing.
The new model comes in a frosted glass finish and it is slightly taller and heavier than the OnePlus 7 to accommodate the bigger display, but in the hand it doesn't feel any larger, thanks to it being marginally narrower and roughly the same thinness.
The front of the OnePlus 7T remains the same as the OnePlus 7, with a teardrop notch at the top of the display. With that said, it has a different look to it thanks to the corners looking a little more square, and the bezels being slightly slimmer.
Put them side by side, and you'll see the 7T does look more impressive, with its display taking up more of that front space, in a phone that's narrower than its predecessor. We've been impressed with the way it feels in the hand.
Display

The OnePlus 7T features a 6.55-inch Fluid AMOLED display with a 2400 x 1080 resolution. The new device also has a 90Hz refresh rate - like the OnePlus 7 Pro.
The OnePlus 7 meanwhile, has a 6.41-inch Optic AMOLED display with a 2340 x 1080 resolution. It has a standard 60Hz refresh rate so the 7T offers a smoother experience. Response times when swiping and gesturing on screen are noticeably more instant, with less "jelly-scrolling" when swiping up and down lists and menus.
The OnePlus 7 has an in-display fingerprint sensor, which the OnePlus 7T also offers. It works quickly and reliably on both, but OnePlus has replaced the green illuminating light with white, perhaps indicating the sensor is a little different to its predecessor.
One of the other big impact updates is that the display is also 1000 nits, and supports HDR10+ content, so it looks that much more dynamic and vibrant without being over saturated. It's a notable improvement on the 7.
Rear camera

The OnePlus 7T comes with a triple rear camera with a 48-megapixel main sensor with an f/1.6 aperture, a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with an aperture of f/2.2 and a 16-megapixel Ultra-Wide lens with an aperture of f/2.2 and a 117-degree field of view.
The OnePlus 7 has a dual rear camera. It has a 48-megapixel main sensor with an f/1.7 aperture, coupled with a secondary 5-megapixel sensor offering an aperture of f/2.4.
It may look a bit weird in its big circle housing, but the new camera system definitely offers a new lease of life to photography compared to the 7. Its three cameras all offer different focal lengths, where the OnePlus 7 only really used the one camera, with the second only offering background data and depth information.
Most of the time, the quality of the images does look better, but being able to take ultra-wide and telephoto shots as well as regular/wide shots is a blessing. As is the Super Macro feature that lets you get really close up on objects to capture the details.
Processor

The OnePlus 7T runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus processor, coupled with 8GB of RAM.
The OnePlus 7 runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with a choice of 6GB or 8GB of RAM so the new model offers a slight powerboost.
OnePlus phones have always been fast, the 7T is no different. Its flash storage is really quick, as is the processor, and combined with that 90Hz display, it makes for a phone that genuinely feels faster and more responsive.
Battery

The OnePlus 7T comes with a 3800mAh battery capacity, along with WARP Charge 30T Fast Charging, said to be 23 per cent faster than the OnePlus 7 Pro.
The OnePlus 7 has a slightly smaller battery capacity at 3700mAh.
In daily use you might not notice much of a difference in battery life between these two, but the charging time has been improved noticeably.

Conclusion
The OnePlus 7T brings more changes than OnePlus usually offers on its "T" series. The design differs, the rear camera adds an additional lens and more features and there's a new, more powerful processor on board the new model. There's also a larger display and a 90Hz refresh rate for a smoother experience over the OnePlus 7.
Should you upgrade to the OnePlus 7T if you have the OnePlus 7? If you can afford to, then there are plenty of differences to make the 7T feel like an update.
If you're choosing between these two models, the OnePlus 7T is the superior device, but if the extra features don't bother you too much, then you might be able to get your hands on the OnePlus 7 cheaper and save yourself some money opting for the older device.
