Onkyo has announced that several of the brands it owns, including Onkyo, Integra and Pioneer Elite, will soon join the 'Works with Sonos' platform, meaning they can be used as part of a Sonos multi-room streaming system.

Owners of compatible products (initially to comprise AV and stereo receivers) will be able to stream music to them via the Sonos smartphone app. A full list of compatible models will be confirmed on June 6 when the necessary firmware update is made available in the US. Owners in Europe may have to wait a bit longer, as there's currently no word on when an update will be rolled out for the equivalent European models.

In order for compatible products to join and be controlled on a Sonos network, they will first need to be connected to a Sonos Connect (sold separately) via RCA interconnects, which puts them onto the Sonos network. Users will be able to group a product with other Sonos devices already on a network or use it independently, options that can be configured via the Sonos app.

Onkyo, Integra and Pioneer Elite products will also get support (albeit very limited) for Amazon Alexa, because of the connection to Sonos. Limited control includes being able to ask Alexa to play a specific artist or song in a specific room.

Speaking to Twice, Don Milks, Onkyo USA director of product localisation said the company wanted to "work with Sonos because of its leadership position in multiroom audio and high adoption rate from consumers and dealers."

Sonos has recently started to expand its system to work with other third party manufacturers. The company recently announced Apple AirPlay 2 support would be coming to the PlayBase, Sonos One and Play:5, but you will be able to stream to other, older Sonos speakers if you have one of the three supported models.
