The PlayStation 5 is a superb games console (if you can find one for sale) but the Xbox Series X and Series S do have a major advantage when it comes to HDR and audio support. They are both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos enabled, for video and audio respectively.

However, contrary to reports published yesterday, that might not be the case for long.

Microsoft has denied it holds a two-year console exclusive on Dolby's formats: "A blog post was mistakenly published by a local Xbox team that included inaccurate information regarding exclusivity of Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision on Xbox Series X|S," said a spokesperson in a statement sent to Pocket-lint.

"There is no exclusivity agreement of either tech on Xbox. We are proud to partner with Dolby to offer Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision to gamers on Xbox and will have more to share about the general availability of Dolby Vision on Xbox Series X/S soon."

Dolby contacted Pocket-lint too, with its own statement on the previous reports: "Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos are not console exclusive and we look forward to working with Microsoft and all our partners to make Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos widely available to gamers," it said.

Both were referring to a blog post that appeared on the French version of the official Xbox Wire. It was soon removed again, but not before garnering attention from eagle-eyed Twitter user Roberto Serrano.

But, while the corrections mean that PlayStation 5 owners could see both Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision support added in the coming months, the platform is not currently enabled and there are no signs of that changing at present.

Of course, unless you have a TV that supports Dolby Vision, plus a soundbar or surround sound setup that supports Dolby Atmos, you likely won't care.

In the meantime, Dolby Atmos will continue to be free to Xbox Series X/S owners, but headphones access requires a one-off licensing payment. Dolby Vision is available on supported content via the consoles' Netflix, Disney+ and other streaming apps.

It is also coming to games soon, with the mode currently being tested by Xbox Insiders first.
