Nintendo appears to have a new wireless Switch controller in the works, which many believe to be a version of the much-loved N64 gamepad.

Details gleaned from an FCC filing - first uncovered by Vooks - denoted a device with the model number HAC-043.

Now it seems that we'll find out exactly what it is this coming Friday, 24 September 2021, as a second filing commits to "short-term confidential" information being made available that day. VGC claims this will include pictures and diagrams.

Considering that a new Nintendo Direct is also heavily rumoured for this month, the clues are starting to add-up.

Two things make us and many others believe the device is an N64 controller. First, Nintendo tends to mark the Switch and all of the peripherals with the 'HAC' moniker, with this latest entry sitting one number higher than the wireless SNES controller we saw released in 2019. And second, a report recently claimed that the Japanese gaming giant has plans to introduce classic N64 games to its Switch Online service - possibly as part of a premium tier.

Considering it released its wireless SNES controller to play classic SNES titles through the service, plus NES controllers for the equivalent games too, it makes sense that an N64 gamepad is also on the horizon.

The basic details of the listing so far do share that the device is both wireless and supports Bluetooth. It also appears to draw more power - 3.5mW - than the Joy-Con's 2.7mW.

As to when it could be released, that's anyone's guess. Also, with the Switch OLED arriving in October, the mysterious new device could even just be a slightly tweaked version of the Pro Controller.

For now, there's nothing to do but play the waiting game. Until Friday, at least.
