Microsoft is reportedly getting ready to unveil a new Surface 3 tablet that will replace the Surface 2 and stand alongside the current Surface Pro 3.

The new Surface tablet, likely named Surface 3, is rumoured to ditch the Windows RT operating system in favour of the full Windows 8.1 experience.

The Surface 3 should be a more affordable and lower spec version of the current Surface Pro 3. According to WinBeta's sources the tablet will come with a fanless CPU that's either an Intel Atom or Intel Core M based processor. This will be a first for the Surface tablets without Pro in the name.

Microsoft is expected to announce the Surface 3 tablet either before or at its Build developer conference on 29 April with availability to follow shortly after. Although at this stage there is no word on pricing other than the obvious expectation that it'll be cheaper than the Surface Pro 3 which starts at £639.

So what does this mean for owners of older non-Pro Surface tablets? Microsoft has already announced that they won't be getting a Windows 10 upgrade when it arrives. So it looks like Windows RT is being left while the new Surface 3 line-up should be getting the Windows 10 upgrade when it finally lands.
